“Heading Home for the Holidays: Grizzly Bear 399 and Her 4 Cubs
In the spring of 2020, at the age of 24, Grizzly Bear 399 surprised and thrilled her many fans when she emerged from hibernation with a brood of four cubs in tow. Already world famous as a “roadside bear” in Grand Teton National Park, 399 had, over the years, raised three litters of triplets, often in view of park tourists. Grizzlies typically have two cubs and it is rare to see a bear this age with any offspring, much less four. In this image she is on her way toward her den during the holidays. She went into hibernation on New Year’s Day. Followers of 399 and her cubs were relieved in the spring of 2021 to see the five-some once again appear after successfully hibernating together. Bear 399 and her many offspring continue to surprise biologists and visitors alike, adding to knowledge and understanding of this important species.
